Devshayani Ekadashi also celebrated as Ashadha Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi, or Hari Shayani Ekadashi falling on the 11th lunar day (Tithi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashadha (typically June or July) marking official commencement of Chaturmas a holy four-month period dedicated to spiritual discipline, inner reflection, and devotion continues until Lord Vishnu awakens on Dev Uthani/Prabodhini Ekadashi in kartik month
On this sacred day Lord Vishnu enters Yogic Nidra (cosmic slumber) on the thousand-headed serpent Sheshnaag. During this Chaturmas-the preserver of creation is at rest.
Importance of Devshayani Ekadashi
Marking the start of Chaturmas, Devshayani Ekadashi is an invitation to practice restraint, reflection, and spiritual discipline. Beyond ritual fasting, these four months serve as an opportunity for devotees to shed worldly distractions and focus on personal growth through prayer, study, and charitable living.
Mirroring Lord Vishnu's cosmic sleep, the period highlights the value of patience, urging believers to slow down and recharge their faith. For Vaishnavas in particular, it is a momentous occasion marked by joyful temple visits, communal prayers, and a renewed commitment to divine worship.
Who looks after the worldy affairs in absence of Lord Vishnu?
According to ancient scriptures, before entering his divine rest, Lord Vishnu hands over the cosmic responsibility of guarding and protecting the universe to none other than Lord Shiva.
As Mahadev takes charge, the universe shifts from a state of gentle preservation to intense transformation. This is why the holy month of Sawan falls right at the start of Chaturmas-a time dedicated entirely to worshipping Shiva to seek his protection.
The rise of negative energies:
With the sun moving southward (Dakshinayana), dark and cosmic energies become more active on Earth. This is why major auspicious events like weddings, housewarmings, and new business launches are paused-the cosmic alignment requires caution and spiritual defense.
The Spiritual Shield:
Because the realm is under Lord Shiva's fierce watch, performing simple daily rituals-like lighting a ghee lamp, practicing Sattvik living, and chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" acts as a protective shield for your home and mind. You will find lot of monks and seers during this time being relocated to multiple temples to perform chantings and puja .
Continuation of Chaturmas
The four months of Chaturmas are widely regarded as an ideal window for deepening one's spiritual practice. During this season, wandering monks and spiritual leaders pause their travels to stay in one place, creating an anchor for local communities. Temples across India witness a notable surge in activity, hosting regular scripture readings, devotional music sessions, and collective prayers. Because whole families participate together, these months offer an enriching spiritual experience for people of every generation.
Conclusion
Devshayani Ekadashi serves as an inspiring entryway into a dedicated spiritual season. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the festival encourages believers to focus on self-discipline and quiet contemplation during Chaturmas. No matter the specific traditions practiced, the essence of the day remains the same: strengthening one's connection with the divine while cultivating gratitude, moral strength, and a renewed sense of purpose.
The universe doesn’t stay unprotected; it is under the watchful eye of the Destroyer of Evil himself. Various festivals after Saawan, like Lord krishna’s Janmashtmi, Maa Durga’s Navratri and others follow during chaturmas itself.
